10...9...8...it's the Christmas countdown. Things to do, presents to buy, parties to plan, it's all a rush-rush-rush. And the stress of trying to do it all puts pressure on our bodies, and our psyches.

It may be difficult to slow down, but we'd like to offer some holiday advice to help you enjoy this time of year more fully. Treat yourself.

No, not to an extra present, drink or dessert. But to a healthy indulgence - treat your back to chiropractic care, treat your body to massage therapy, treat your mind to a few moments respite from the busy world outside.

Remember this: the holiday season is all about being with family and friends. Enjoying good health is the best way to enjoy being with those we love. Because it's not about presents, it's about presence.

Dr. Mark and the staff at the Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center of Cincinnati wish you and yours the happiest Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's.

Consider the following tips:

  • Don't shop 'til you drop.
  • Stay hydrated - with water! Don't rely on caffeinated beverages to get you through the day. Skip the extra coffee, tea and pop. On shopping days you may need more water than usual. Drink at least 8-10 glasses.
  • Wear comfortable, cushioned shoes and comfortable, layered clothing for those shopping expeditions.
  • Leave that heavy purse at home. Instead, use a fanny pack or light backback with as few things as possible inside. Pack only essentials like driver's license, credit card, etc.
  • Take some time to stretch your muscles before and after shopping. When you're stressed, there is more pressure on your muscles and you may be less flexible. Loosen up.
  • Don't marathon shop. Take a break every 45 minutes or so. Eat light foods like salad or fruit for energy rather than heavy fillers like fries and burgers.
  • Don't carry more than you can handle. Take a trip back to the car and unload your packages.
  • Leave the kids at home. Trying to keep track of children while shopping in a busy mall is stressful.
  • Don't wrap your gifts while sitting on the floor - that can hurt your back. Try standing next to a countertop or a table, or sit on the bed or a chair. Vary your position and stretch in the opposite direction that you're leaning to help relieve back pressure.
  • If you experience pain or discomfort during your holiday shopping trips, call our office. Dr. Korchok can help alleviate your pain naturally, so you can enjoy the holidays with your family pain-free.

One must not always think that feeling is everything.

If I’d known I was gonna live this long. I’d have taken better care of myself.
Eubie Blake (at age 100)

The human body has been designed to resist an infinite number of changes and attacks brought about
by its environment.
The secret of good health lies in successful adjustment to changing stresses
on the body.
